MulticulturalismAccording to a 2010 New York Times article, around 800 different languages are spoken in New York City. And in at least 40% of New York households a language other than English is spoken on a daily basis.
Such diversity can both spark creative combinations across cultures as well as create misunderstandings and misgivings among the 8 million citizens of New York: We live in a world where tolerance for different attitudes and behaviors are challenged every day. This billboard is a small attempt to remind each of us that we live with others and in order to succeed together, must acknowledge each other's belief systems—even if we do not agree with them. It does not intend to say we cannot discuss and debate the differences; instead it suggests we always start from a mutual point of respect. The languages here are, in order of appearance (top to bottom, left to right): Polish; French Creole; Yoruba; Korean; Hebrew; Chinese; English; Afrikaans; Thai; Turkish; Russian; Spanish; Malaysian; Arabic; Japanese; Portugese; Greek; Hindi Together they form a collection of some of the most used languages by many citizens of New York City. The proximity of different languages on this billboard is based on esthetics only and carries no additional meaning. —Henk Van Assen |

Healthy EatingFruits and Veggies:
The focus of this inaugural campaign is healthy eating: using billboards to encourage Americans to eat their fruits and vegetables. Why Fruits and Veggies? Despite decades of attempts to persuade Americans to eat their vegetables, very few of us are getting the advised share. A 2009 Study using data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Study found that only 0.9% of adolescents, 2.2% of adult men, and 3.5% of adult women consumed the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables (between 4-9 servings, depending on calorie consumption). Like petulant children who feed the dog their peas and carrots when no one’s looking, Americans just won’t eat their vegetables. In an interview in a New York Times article about the tribulations of getting Americans to eat their vegetables, Marcia Mogelonsy, a senior analyst for a global marketing firm, says, “Eating vegetables is a lot less fun than eating flavor-blasted Doritos.” An accurate statement indeed. Where’s the fun in eating a head of broccoli? Or so Americans think. This is where we propose an intervention. Eating vegetables can be as mind-blowingly fun as licking that last bit of neon orange gunk off your fingers after finishing a bag of Doritos, and we plan on convincing America using the help of artists. 14x48's first campaign aims to re-position the vegetable as the ham of the party. We want to spread the gospel: fruits and vegetables are cool, fun, and tasty. |
